Southern Shores Historic Flat Top Tour Returns April 25th, 2026

Southern Shores, NC — Architecture enthusiasts, history lovers, and Outer Banks visitors are invited to experience a unique journey through time at the Southern Shores Historic Flat Top Tour, taking place on Saturday, April 25th, 2026.

This one-of-a-kind event celebrates the iconic “flat top” cottages that define Southern Shores’ mid-century modern architectural heritage. Built beginning in the late 1940s, these distinctive cottages are known for their clean lines, flat or low-pitched roofs, expansive windows, and seamless integration with the natural coastal environment.

The self-guided tour will provide participants with rare access to 13 cottages of varying sizes, location, styles and finishes:  13 Skyline Road, 78 Skyline Road, 43 Ocean Boulevard, 69 Ocean Boulevard, 113 Ocean Boulevard, 157 Ocean Boulevard, 169 Ocean Boulevard, 170 Ocean Boulevard, 218 Ocean Boulevard, 23 Porpoise Run, 156 Wax Myrtle Trail, 159 Wax Myrtle Trail and 18 East Dogwood Trail.  

Proceeds from the tour benefit the Outer Banks Community Foundation Flat Top Preservation Fund, which provides funds for the preservation and maintenance of the historic flat top located at 13 Skyline Road designed by Frank Stick and now owned by the Town of Southern Shores.

Ticket holders will receive a complimentary cup of coffee on tour day from Shore Coffee Roasters.
