Mental Health & the Myth of the 'Easy Decision'

Let’s talk about something that no one warns you about when you decide to build a house: the mental load.

Turns out, building a custom home means making decision after decision after decision. Big ones. Small ones. Ones you didn’t know existed. (Yes, you will be asked to choose the direction your flooring planks run. No, you won’t be emotionally prepared for that question.)

Decision Fatigue Is Real

Do you get overwhelmed by too many options? If so, prepare yourself. Losing sleep whilst debating paint colors, or spiraling into a 2-hour rabbit hole researching grout types could become a thing.

While your builder and their team will help guide you, most choices are ultimately up to you. This is your custom home, after all. But when the options are endless and your Pinterest board has 3,000 pins, it's easy to freeze up.

How to Stay Sane

  • Limit your options: Since there are so many options, and that's a good thing, finally making a choice won't mean regret.  It will mean you picked one of the ones you liked.  So be prepared to narrow down to two or three choices at most and know that you won't miss the others. If you like them all, any one of them will likely look great.
  • Phone a friend: Bring in someone you trust—someone who understands your style and isn’t afraid to tell you the truth.
  • Hire a pro: Interior designers aren’t just for the rich and famous. A little guidance can save time, money, and marital stress.

And remember—once you’ve made a choice, move on. You’re not going to remember the tile you didn’t pick once the one you did pick is installed and gleaming under your perfectly placed pendant lights.

Perfection Is Not the Goal

It’s easy to worry what others might think of your choices. But here’s the truth: this is your home. It’s meant to reflect your style, not what someone online would do. Trust your instincts, stay true to your taste, and give yourself grace for not being a professional designer.

Don’t Delay... or It Will Cost You

Delaying decisions can delay your entire build. Every “I’ll get back to you” can snowball into scheduling conflicts, missed deadlines, and frustrated tradespeople who move on to the next job. Make the call—even if it’s not perfect. Your builder can’t install something you haven’t picked yet.  And if you need to rely on eanie-meanie-minie-mo, that's ok!  Whatever it takes!
