A lighthearted look at Outer Banks spots with names bold enough to make Grandma clutch her pearls — unless it was her idea to go there. In that case, we’ll just have to see if you agree with our Grandma Blush Rating below.
Some places are known for the food. Some are known for the merch. And some are known for making visitors and locals alike slow down, squint at the sign, and ask, “Did that really say what I think it said? Should we go in there? Paul, turn the car around. I’m craving a biscuit.”
Around the Outer Banks, a good name can be part of the experience. These local spots have the kind of family-movie humor where the kids notice the burgers, biscuits, crabs, snacks, and colorful signs — while the adults are quietly reading everything twice and making eye contact across the table.
We didn’t name them. We simply arrived with a camera, questionable maturity, and a very official rating system.
Grandma Blush Rating Guide:
1/10 = Grandma didn’t notice.
5/10 = Grandma adjusted her glasses.
10/10 = Grandma bought pearls just to clutch them.

She’s fine. She’s out in the car, though. We think she’s laughing at us. Or changing the will. Hard to say.
Spanky’s Grille opened in Kitty Hawk in 2003 after starting as a longtime dream for its owners. According to their website, the idea was simple: cooked-to-order food, fast service, and affordable prices. A classic beach-road stop with burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and the kind of casual energy that makes sense on vacation.
But then you walk inside.
Between the monkeys, the surfboards, the T-shirts, and the very confident signage, Spanky’s has that family-movie kind of humor where the kids see bright colors and burgers, while the adults quietly read the slogans twice. Grandma is checking whether she packed pearls, but nobody has officially left the table.
Why it made the list: The name starts the double take. The merch wall finishes it.

Seafood? Yes. A sentence you may not want shouted across a parking lot? Also yes.
I Got Your Crabs opened in Kitty Hawk in 2012, but the story behind it goes back much further. According to Outer Banks Voice, owner Hunter Stuart started young — catching crabs with a small boat and a few pots, then selling them from a Radio Flyer wagon before he was even in first grade.
The name came from real life. People kept calling him looking for crabs, and eventually the business name practically answered the phone for him.
That is the beauty of this one. Yes, the name is doing a full cartwheel in the parking lot. But underneath the double meaning is a genuinely local story about a waterman, a family business, and a very clear understanding of how to get people’s attention.
Why it made the list: It is both completely logical and completely impossible to say with a straight face.

She knows it’s a snack shop. That is not the issue.
Try My Nuts started in Corolla in 1999 with one 600-square-foot beach store. Their website ties the beginning of the business to the Outer Banks experience: the beach, the ocean, the Corolla wild horses, and that carefree vacation feeling that makes people buy snacks, souvenirs, and apparently very bold T-shirts.
They have since grown into multiple retail locations, including several on the Outer Banks. Which means the name worked. The nuts traveled. The bit became a brand.
This is one of those stops where the grown-ups are pretending to browse casually while absolutely noticing every label, shirt, and sign in the building. The kids see candy and snacks. The adults see the name and suddenly become very interested in the ceiling.
Why it made the list: It is a snack shop with the confidence of a person who knows exactly what they said.

The name walked in, sat down, and ordered for the table.
Dirty Dick’s Crab House may not be the oldest operating spot on this list, but it might have the oldest pearl-clutching origin story. According to Outer Banks This Week, founder Ken Hersey came up with the idea back in 1970 while vacationing on the Outer Banks. The concept reportedly started as a joke between friends and eventually became a real restaurant years later.
The restaurant opened in the mid-1990s, and the now-famous T-shirt slogan was part of the plan from the beginning. People were apparently interested in the shirts before the business was even fully open, which tells you everything you need to know about the power of a name that refuses to whisper.
Dirty Dick’s is also a reminder that a bold name does not automatically mean a place takes itself too seriously. The joke is obvious. The seafood is the point. The shirts are just there to make sure your relatives have something to discuss on the ride home.
Why it made the list: The joke waited decades for its moment, then showed up with crab legs and merchandise.

Did we save the best for last? You bet your hot buttered biscuit we did!
Of all the names on this list, Biscuits N’ Porn may have the most legendary local backstory. According to Outer Banks Voice, the Stop Quik Citgo in Nags Head has been a community staple since 1978. Locals also knew it as Miss Helen’s, after original owner Helen Grandy.
The “Biscuits N’ Porn” nickname came later, thanks in part to local surfers who would stop in after early morning sessions for biscuits. The other half of the nickname came from the store’s adult magazine selection. There it is. That is the sentence. We all made it through together.
Eventually, the family embraced the nickname with stickers, shirts, and merchandise. Miss Helen reportedly had one very important condition: leave her name out of that part. Respectfully, iconic.
And the branding worked. Outer Banks Voice reported that both merchandise and food sales took off after the nickname became part of the store’s identity. The biscuits were already doing their job. The sign just made everyone talk about them.
Also, full disclosure: I may or may not have purchased an infant onesie from Helen’s a few years ago... for a friend. Also, Jerry just left my office raving about Helen's Chicken and Dumplings and now I am setting a reminder on my phone to get in line later this week before it's all gone.
Why it made the list: It went from local nickname to roadside legend, and somewhere along the way, Grandma either clutched her pearls or bought a T-shirt.
History note: Much of the background on the Biscuits N’ Porn nickname comes from Maggie Miles’ Outer Banks Voice article, “What’s in a nickname?”
Final Pearl Count
If nothing else, let this be your reminder that the Outer Banks has never been short on personality. We have wild horses, ocean views, historic lighthouses, seafood, sunsets... and apparently, a strong tradition of naming places like someone dared us to.
Some of these spots are restaurants. Some are shops. Some are local legends. All of them have figured out how to make people slow down, point at a sign, laugh in the car, and maybe turn around because now everybody wants a biscuit, crab legs, a T-shirt, or a snack they are not emotionally prepared to say out loud.
So pack your beach bag, bring your appetite, and maybe toss in a strand of pearls just in case.
Because yes, we went there. And honestly? Grandma might already be in line.
