The Outer Banks is a magical place to be during the holiday season. While you can't go swimming, the ocean is still beautiful to look at, there are plenty of festive local events happening, and you can enjoy a family vacation without paying Summer rates. Treat yourself to a holiday vacation this year!
Throughout the month of December, you can go see the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens decorated in Christmas lights! Walk throughout the gardens with hot cocoa while listening to holiday music! Takes place from December 1 through January 9, 2021.
*2020 UPDATE* The Poulos family, with a heavy heart, has decided to forgo their famous Christmas lights this year. They plan to light up the Outer Banks again next year.
Follow a couple of wooded roads to the heart of Kill Devil Hills to take in one of the most spectacular holiday light displays in coastal North Carolina. Every year the Poulos family hosts a grand display at their Kill Devil Hills home. They have won a few television competition shows! It takes them 12 weeks to set up the display and costs roughly $3,500 in energy bills a year! You can catch the display from November 26th through December 31st.
Head to downtown Manteo on December 4th for the annual Christmas tree lighting. This takes place near the courthouse off of Queen Elizabeth Avenue. Hot cocoa will be available and there will be Christmas carols. The event is free and open to the public!
Taking place on December 5th, the annual Manteo Christmas Parade is a tradition cherished by locals and tourists alike! Enjoy local school bands, floats, vintage cars, and more drive through downtown waterfront Manteo!
The town of Manteo is closing the downtown streets for live music, family-friendly activities, and an early ball drop for the kids on New Year's Eve. Local food vendors will be on-site, and the downtown restaurants and bars will be open late. Topping it off is a full-on fireworks show, the largest in the state, choreographed to music.
