The Bodie Island Lighthouse is located on Hwy 12, north of Oregon Inlet on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The lighthouse was constructed in 1872. Ownership was transferred from the US Coast Guard to the National Park Service in 2000. Still a functioning U.S. Coast Guard navigational aid, the tower remains closed to the public. Visitor Center open to the public.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located in Buxton, on Hatteras island. It is the tallest lighthouse in the nation, and the beacon from the light can be seen 20-miles out to sea.
Visitors are welcome to climb the 268 steps for a spectacular view of the national seashore. The lighthouse site houses a visitors center that is open throughout the year and features displays on the island's maritime history.

The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located in Corolla, North Carolina, just beyond Currituck Heritage Park. On December 1, 1875 the beacon of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse filled the remaining "dark spot" on the North Carolina coast between the Cape Henry light to the north and Bodie Island to the south. To distinguish the Currituck Beach Lighthouse from other regional lighthouses, its exterior was left unpainted and gives today's visitor a sense of the multitude of bricks used to form the structure. The lighthouse was automated in 1939 when the United States Coast Guard assumed the duties of the Bureau of Lighthouses. At a height of 158 feet, the night beacon still flashes at 20-second intervals to warn ships hugging the chain of barrier islands along the coast. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Museum Shop are open daily from Easter through Thanksgiving (closed Thanksgiving Day).

The Ocracoke light, located on Ocracoke island, is the second oldest operating lighthouse in the nation. Completed in 1823, the lighthouse stands 75 feet tall. Its diameter narrows from 25 feet at the base to 12 feet at its peak. Though the lighthouse is not open for climbing, the site can be visited daily.

During the 19th century and through the 1930s, Nags Head Woods was a thriving village community with 13 homesites, two churches, a school, a store, farms, a gristmill and a shingle factory. There are artifacts remaining of village life: a home foundation, cemeteries and other signs of previous human habitation in the forest. This extensive ecological preserve on North Carolina’s Outer Banks protects a remarkable range of unique habitats, including forested dunes, interdune ponds, marshes, and wetlands.

Climb Big Kill Devil Hill for a breathtaking view of the area from sound to sea. Stand on the same spot where the brothers made their first flights. A large granite boulder marks the spot where the first plane left the ground. Additional exhibits, movies and educational programs are available in the Centennial Pavilion.

Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and Full Service Marina is located 8 miles south of Whalebone Junction on NC 12 at the north end of the Oregon Inlet Bridge in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The National Park Service maintains a boat launch behind the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center with ample parking for cars and trailers. There is no fee for use of the facility. Bait, ice, fuel, oil, camping supplies, fishing tackle, boating equipment, clothing, food, beverages and printed copies of North Carolina fishing regulations are all available from the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center main store.
