Congratulations #GiveAGetaway Sweepstakes Winner!

A Sea Chalet #7350 | 7 Bedroom Oceanside Corolla Vacation Rental
A Sea Chalet #7350 | 7 Bedroom Oceanside Corolla Vacation Rental

Beach Realty / Kitty Hawk Rentals is proud to announce Kristy from Seaford, VA as the winner of the #GiveAGetaway Sweepstakes! Kristy nominated her friend Carol to receive the 3 night vacation in “A Sea Chalet” #7350! Kristy and Carol’s story touched our hearts and we are thrilled to have chosen such a deserving winner.

With a very grateful heart, I would give this to one of the most amazing and inspirational individuals I know – Carol B. I met Carol one day while my husband was fighting for his life from his injuries from Iraq in the ER. Carol was the only one who reached out and helped us. She stayed at the hospital, was there after every surgery (there were 14 surgeries total) and helped us every step of the way. Her incredible heart and passion for our fallen heroes and wounded warriors surpasses any other individual I have met. She has saved literally hundreds of our military heroes lives by getting them the medical care and assistance they need. Day or night. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. Regardless. She is comparable to the Mother Teresa of our military. I am both honored and forever grateful for all she has done for my family – especially when she didn’t have to and when no one else cared. I know she loves the Outer Banks and I know she sure could use a little piece of Heaven to recharge. While I could never in a million years repay her for her kindness and compassion, I sure can hopefully honor her and her amazing work by proudly nominating her for this contest. Knowing Carol, she is going to be embarrassed she is even in the spot light. But that’s the incredible part of life – those with the greatest love spread the greatest light.

First Time Visit To The Outer Banks

First Timer to the Outer Banks?

Here’s some great tips for your first visit.

For those who are considering the Outer Banks for your next vacation destination, here are a few things you might consider:

Layout 1
Over 400 Outer Banks Vacation Rentals from 4×4 – Carova Beach to South Nags Head

Stay in a Vacation Rental Home – the great majority of visitors to the Outer Banks stay in a vacation rental. There are thousands to choose from ranging in size from 2- 26 bedrooms! Most vacation rentals are managed by property managers that offer full-services and are available 24 hours/day. I suggest renting through Beach Realty & Construction / Kitty Hawk Rentals or call 800.635.1559.

Stay a whole week – I know sometimes you can only get away for a weekend, but I suggest staying a full week at the Outer Banks for several reasons. 1. There are so many things to see and do that a few nights is not long enough. 2. Most vacation rental homes rent by the full week only and you limit your selection if you stay less than one week.

Ask locals for advice on places to eat – There are many awesome restaurants on the Outer Banks, almost all of them you’ve never heard of because they don’t exist anywhere but here. There are many that are “touristy” and rely on heavy marketing to get the crowds in the doors and there are many others that don’t have to do any marketing because they are filled year-round with hungry locals and visitors that can’t wait to chow down on their all-time favorite dish. There are a few must-try places on my list which includes Johns Drive in, Black Pelican, Roadhouse Café, Blue Moon Grill.

IMG_7829Watch the Sunrise and Sunset over the water – what I love is that this island is so narrow that you can literally walk from Ocean to Sound in just minutes in most places. Wake up early one day and watch the sun rise over the ocean and end the day with a stroll over to the soundfront to watch the sun set.

IMG_8081Try to squeeze in at least one Outer Banks attraction – I know that you want to get in as many beach days as you can on vacation, but if you have time I highly recommend checking out at least one of these amazing Outer Banks attractions:

  • Jockeys Ridge – tallest natural sand dune in the Eastern US. Kids will love running or rolling down the dunes. Bring the camera!
  • Wright Brothers Memorial – For the history enthusiast
  • Lighthouses – there are 5. I recommend the Currituck Light in Corolla. The view from the top is phenomenal (Currituck Light, Bodie Island, Marsh’s Light, Cape Hatteras & Ocracoke).
  • Piers – there are many. Kitty Hawk Pier, Avalon Pier, Nags Head Pier, Jenette’s Pier, Rodanthe Pier, Duck Research Pier, Outer Banks Pier. I recommend the Outer Banks Pier in South Nags Head, Fish heads
  • Roanoke Island Attractions – Spend a day at Roanoke Island and visit the NC Aquarium, Elizabethan Gardens, Roanoke Festival Park, Elizabeth II, Marshes Lighthouse and catch a performance of the Lost Colony. You may also want to stroll the streets of downtown Manteo and patron it’s shops and restaurants.
  • Whalehead Club in Corolla – On the same property as the Currituck Lighthouse and the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, the Whalehead club offers a picturesque landscape and daily tours and programs.

IMG_0046_1If possible, drive a 4×4 vehicle. The Outer Banks is one of few destinations that you are allowed to drive on the beach (some towns only allow it in the off-season and others require a permit). If you have a 4×4 vehicle, I highly recommend a day in Carova Beach (there are no roads here and beach driving is allowed year-round, no permit necessary). Carova Beach is home to hundreds of wild horses that roam the beach, dunes and grassy fields. As I said, there are no roads in Carova Beach so beach driving is required. You can park and spend a day on the beach, just make sure you stock up on essentials prior, because there are no stores either. You may also consider renting a home in Carova Beach if you truly want to get away from it all.

photo (16)Feel the Ocean every day. Depending on what time of year you come and the way the wind is blowing, the water temperature can fluctuate dramatically on the Outer Banks from day to day, sometimes even morning to afternoon. Don’t assume that because the water was 55 degrees on Monday that it won’t be 70 degrees on Tuesday – it is definitely possible.

Don’t worry about getting lost – I mention earlier that the Outer Banks is narrow. There is really only one main road and it goes north and south. From Kitty Hawk – Nags Head there is also a 4 lane bypass, but north or south of these towns there is just one main road, you might have heard of it – Rt. 12? Locals and seasoned visitors use mileposts to get around. Mileposts are visible, green mile markers on the side of the road which we use to give directions. For example, Where’s Jockey’s Ridge State Park? Head South on the bypass to Milepost 12.

644 Belle of the South
644 Belle of the South – Oceanfront in Corolla

While thousands of families have been traveling to the Outer Banks for generations, there are far too many families that have never even heard of the Outer Banks – even from our own state of North Carolina. Many of us who live and vacation on the Outer Banks are faced with the dilemma of whether to spread the word or keep our paradise a secret.

Having grown up in Charlotte, NC (a good 7 hours from the OBX), I was accustomed to beach vacations in Myrtle Beach and on occasions, Wrightsville Beach or Ocean Isle. The only exposure I had to the Outer Banks was via the occasional OBX bumper sticker – of which I honestly had no idea what it meant. It wasn’t until attending college at North Carolina State in Raleigh that I met someone from the Outer Banks. I remember thinking, “people actually live there?”

My first visit was full of surprises. I wondered… Where are all the chain restaurants? Where are the high-rise hotels? Where is “the boardwalk” or “the strip”? “Where do people sleep?” I was expecting something like Myrtle Beach. I quickly discovered that the Outer Banks is nothing like other beach towns, in fact the Outer Banks is quite different from any destination I have ever been. I fell in love with the unique, local, laid back culture of the Outer Banks.

BEACH REALTY / KITTY HAWK RENTALS HOSTS VETERANS OF WOUNDED WARRIORS IN ACTION (WWIA) FOUNDATION FOR SECOND ANNUAL NORTH CAROLINA WATERFOWL EVENT.

For the second year, in support of the WWIA Foundation and America’s combat wounded Purple Heart veterans,  Beach Realty & Construction and Kitty Hawk Rentals hosts a group of veterans in a Four Seasons, Duck vacation home from January 7th – 11th, 2015. Beach Realty / Kitty Hawk Rentals coordinates with various local businesses in providing daily Currituck Sound hunting excursions & meals through the duration of the event.

After the 2014 North Carolina Waterfowl WWIA event, Purple Heart recipient Bob Pierce, commented on his experience:

“This was my first WWIA event and I had a great time. The people that set up this event were some of the best people I have ever hunted with or been around. Tim Spence lead an outstanding event, had some great help and unbelievable support. This weekend has made me realize just how many good people there are still in this country. The hunting was some of the most fun I have had in a long time. I have been kind of keeping to myself for a long time since I was injured and this helped me trust people that I don’t know again. I can never begin to express how much this has meant to me THANK YOU!”

Beach Realty / Kitty Hawk Rentals has received generous support for this event from the following local businesses; Midgett Cleaning, Currituck BBQ, Blue Pointe, Tommy’s Market, Kevin’s, Currituck Sports, Red Sky Café, Danny / Lisa Newbern (Dockside in Duck), Sparks Tractor Service, Hardee’s and Sanctuary Vineyards.

Beach Realty / Kitty Hawk Rentals is proud to contribute to this event and to show their support of the WWIA Foundation.
