What’s New on the Outer Banks – 2016 Edition

When you live on the Outer Banks you get used to change… whether it be local businesses opening or closing, new homes going up, older homes torn down or the shifting landscapes of beautiful barrier island. I’d like to take a moment to highlight some of what’s new on the Outer Banks in 2016! Are you ready to book your Outer Banks Vacation? Start your search at beachrealtync.com.

IMG_2243Corolla Multi-use Path

The Corolla sidewalk/multi-use path is a much needed addition to the town of Corolla. It will stretch from Ocean Sands A all the way north to Albacore Street (the start of Whalehead). It’s going to be a MUCH safer season in 2016 with this multi-use pathway in place.  We’re told completion is scheduled for the end of April.  With the progress so far, I think they will make it!

Corolla Adventure Park

Only a few years after the first “Adventure Park” went up in Kill Devil Hills, a second is being constructed in Corolla. On the north end of Corolla you’ll find their newest climbing obstacle perfect for the adventure seeker! I personally have yet to see the set up but I imagine it will look similar to the First Flight Adventure park.

Dune Buggy Rentals

Our old flagship office in Kill Devil Hills is the new home to a Dune Buggy Rental business called, Buggin’ Out.

New Outer Banks Rentals

Beach Realty & Construction / Kitty Hawk Rentals is proud to welcome over 30 new homes to the program for 2016! One of these new homes is a brand new Beach Built home, Sea Fever #3652, which will offer 6 bedrooms, private pool and hot tub and is located Oceanside in Duck!

How to Avoid Traffic on the Outer Banks

If you’ve ever arrived on the Outer Banks on a Saturday during July & August, you probably got stuck in traffic. Here’s why… During the prime Summer weeks the Outer Banks is close to 100% occupied. Most Outer Banks vacationers come from the North and there is only one road/bridge leading to the beach.  There are over 20,000 vacation rentals on the Outer Banks and the majority of them turnover on a Saturday. So… If each home sleeps an average of 10 people, 150,000 people are heading to the Outer Banks on any given Saturday during the summer. If every car has at least 4 people in it there will be 35,000 cars crossing the eastbound Wright Memorial Bridge during the day. Since we’ve been stuck in traffic many times before, we know how awesome it would be to avoid it. We’ve compiled a list below on the best tips and tricks to avoid traffic on the Outer Banks.

1. Consider Sunday-Sunday or Friday – Friday Vacation Rentals.

If you’ve already booked your Summer vacation, skip this one. While the majority of rentals are Saturday – Saturday, there is still a great selection of vacation rentals that turnover on a Sunday! Traffic is usually much smoother on Sunday vs. Saturday. Rarely do we see back-ups over the bridge on Sunday (incoming or outgoing). View our Sunday – Sunday Rentals. Friday – Friday vacation rentals are a great way to go too! The selection of Friday turnover homes is smaller but the traffic is obsolete! View our Friday – Friday Rentals.

2. Be across the bridge before 11am.

(11am: July & 1st 2 weeks in August or 12pm: June & late August – early September). All other times of year traffic is not an issue.
If you can time it so you are across the Wright Memorial Bridge bridge and onto the Outer Banks BEFORE 11am, you will miss the majority of the traffic. The problem is you can’t check in until 4pm. You’ve been stuck in a car for a while and you have no place to unload.

Here are some practical ideas to kill time:

  • Go souvenir shopping! This is the best time to go to local shops and buy souvenirs! Here are some recommendations for shopping:
    • Corolla,  Tim Buck Too Shopping center.
    • Duck, Scarborough Faire Shopping Center.
    • Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores, Buccaneer Village Shops at MP 4 (Children’s Museum is awesome).
    • Nags Head/South Nags Head, Kitty Hawk Kites at Jockey’s Ridge, Tanger Outlets or Outer Banks Mall.
  • Putt-Putt or YMCA – stretch your legs for a round of putt-putt or visit the family YMCA in Nags Head.
  • Go to the beach. Find a public beach access close to your check-in office and soak up the sun until your rental home is ready.

3. Request Early Check-In

Early check-in does not let you skip the traffic (wouldn’t that be great!?), but if you purchase early check-in AND you arrive before 11am (or 12pm), you can grab a bite to eat and start off on your vacation! A limited number of early check-ins are available for a fee. If available, you’ll be able to get into your home by 1pm.

4. Arrive after 6pm

The Saturday Summer traffic is at it’s worst from 12pm – 4pm but it will occasionally linger on until after 5pm. If you need to kill time on your drive down, check out some of these great places to stop on your way to the beach!

Keep in mind traffic is only an issue on Saturdays (and some Sundays) during the prime Summer months (mid-June through mid-August). Any other day/time, you can sail across the bridge in either direction going the normal speed limit!

outer-banks-vacations-babies-and-toddlersThe Outer Banks is the perfect destination for families with young children. Why? Staying in a vacation rental is much more convenient than being cooped up in a hotel room when you have a baby and/or toddler. You’ll have plenty of space to let your little one play, sleep and eat. The Outer Banks has the largest selection of vacation rentals than any other beach destination. Compared to other east coast beach destinations, the Outer Banks offers a peaceful, family friendly environment with neighborhoods, slower speed limits and easy beach access. You’ll also find plenty of Outer Banks attractions, restaurants and shops that cater to little ones. We’ve compiled a list of recommendations for Outer Banks vacations for families with babies and toddlers.

What to do:

Visit the Sound Beach at Jockey’s Ridge for shallow, calm water that your little one can splash around in!

North Carolina Waterfowl Event“This was my first WWIA event and I had a great time. The people that set up this event were some of the best people I have ever hunted with or been around. Tim Spence lead an outstanding event, had some great help and unbelievable support. This weekend has made me realize just how many good people there are still in this country. The hunting was some of the most fun I have had in a long time. I have been kind of keeping to myself for a long time since I was injured and this helped me trust people that I don’t know again. 13. Full Moon & Cafe on Roanoke Island, Manteo

Full Moon Cafe has been a favorite dining destination on the Outer Banks since 1995. The location on a busy corner in the heart of downtown Manteo gives the restaurant a lively, happening feel. Dine outside under shady umbrellas or take a seat by a window indoors; either choice offers a great view of the activities in downtown Manteo. The atmosphere here is fun, un-stuffy and relaxed, with friendly service.

Full Moon’s food is diverse, delicious and incredibly fresh. The owners have high standards for freshness, flavor and presentation. They’re known for their perfectly prepared Angus steaks and fresh, local seafood, but the menu includes a surprising range of fare for everyone from seafood lovers to meat eaters to vegetarians to kids. Full Moon Cafe

The new Full Moon Brewery is the only place in downtown Manteo to taste flavorful, hand-crafted brews and watch the ancient art of brewing. The wine list is extensive, with more than 70 bottles offered.

The café is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week in-season. Call for off-season hours. Dinner reservations are accepted.
